Rubies: King of Gems

Edwardian Ruby Ring via Lang Antiques (priced at 33K)
Alchemists thought of the ruby as a symbol of the “Philosopher’s Stone” or “Elixir of Life”:
“He that has once the flower of the sun,
The perfect ruby which we call elixir
Not only can do that, but, by its virtue
Can confer honour, love, respect, long life,
Give safety, valour, ya, and victory,
To whom he will.”
Ben Jonson The Alchemist II-i (1610)
Rubies have always been my most beloved gem; the symbol of true love, passion and the eternal flame. The homes of the Gods were said to be lit by the glow of rubies. As far as I’m concerned you can take all your diamonds and bury them. Maybe they’ll grow lilies!
Rubies always remind me of this poem written by Dorothy Parker. As magical as rubies are adorning Russian crowns & Judy Garland’s shoes I’d certainly go with Ms. Parker on this one. Maybe it’s naive of me but what can I say, “la vie de la romantique.” Not even the most glorious gem could trump the pleasure of true love:
The Choice
He’d have given me rolling lands,
Houses of marble, and billowing farms,
Pearls, to trickle between my hands,
Smoldering rubies, to circle my arms.
You- you’d only a lilting song,
Only a melody, happy and high,
You were sudden and swift and strong-
Never a thought for another had I.
He’d have given me laces rare,
Dresses that glimmered with frosty sheen,
Shining ribbons to wrap my hair,
Horses to draw me, as fine as a queen.
You- you’d only to whistle low,
Gayly I followed wherever you led.
I took you, and I let him go-
Somebody ought to examine my head!
Dorothy Parker
